Nguyên tắc về thân cây và Nebari
1. Nên để chiều cao thân cây gấp 6 lần đường kính rễ cây.

2. Thân cây và ngọn cây nên để hơi nghiêng về phía trước hướng về bên phải người xem. (Văn hóa Nhật Bản là văn hóa cúi chào, làm cây như vậy trông giống như là cây đang chào người xem vậy. Bạn có thể bỏ qua nguyên tắc này.)
3. Rễ cây nên được tạo dáng xòe ra và để cho nó nhô lên trên nền chậu, như thế trông nó giống như đang bám vào đất để giữ cho cây đứng thẳng.
Tuy vậy, khi đi thi những cây thông, tùng được miễn chấm phần rễ.
4. Không nên để những nút sần mọc trên rễ cây vì người xem sẽ để ý nhiều đến nó.
5. Thân cây nên được giữ thon từ dưới lên trên để trông nó như là đang mọc vươn lên, nhưng không được làm thon ngược lại từ trên xuống.
6. Xóa mọi vết tích bàn tay con người tác động vào: mối ghép, vết cưa cắt đục đẽo, lằn của dây quấn…
7. Uốn thân cây sao cho những điểm uốn trên thân không mang hình “ức bồ câu” và nếu người xem nhìn thấy phần lõm của khúc uốn thì dễ chịu hơn thấy phần lồi.
8. Trên những thân cây trực, nếu có quá nhiều điểm uốn hình chữ “S” sẽ làm cho cây trông rất nặng nề mất đi vẻ tự nhiên vốn có của nó.
9. Một cây chỉ nên mang một ngọn. Nếu cây 2, 3 thân thì có thể làm thành 2, 3 ngọn khác nhau, nhìn rất đẹp. Tuy nhiên độ cao của các ngọn không được bằng nhau. Bạn có thể xem ví dụ về cây neea của ông Budi Sulistyo
10. Đối với cây 2,3 thân thì nên được tách ra ở chỗ gốc cây.
Nguyên tắc đối với nhánh cây
11. Nhìn chung, cành nối với thân thì nên trĩu xuống cho có vẻ già nua, nhưng chi (dăm, chồi) thì lại hướng lên trời nhìn mới tự nhiên.
12. Nhánh đầu tiên nên được đặt nằm ở khoảng 1/3 chiều cao thân cây tính từ gốc. Nhánh thứ 2 ở khoảng 1/3 từ nhánh thứ 1 tới ngọn, và cứ thế cho các nhánh tiếp theo.
13. Đường kính nhánh cây nên được cân đối với thân cây. Những nhánh cây được xem là quá khổ là những nhánh có đường kính dày hơn 1/3 đường kính thân cây.
14. Các nhánh nên mọc luân phiên xen kẽ theo đường xoáy trôn ốc. Nhìn từ trên xuống, cành sẽ mọc như thế này:
15. Không nên để 2 cành mọc song song.
16. Nên chừa một khoảng trống đủ rộng giữa những nhánh cây. Gần như không có cây nào tán lá dày đặc như một cái nón chụp lên cây mà được coi là đẹp.
17. Không nên làm các nhánh cây xòe ra từ một chỗ trên thân cây như hình nan hoa xe đạp, hay là để những nhánh cây xoắn lại hoặc những nhánh cây thẳng tuột, trông chúng rất vô duyên.
18. Nên tạo hình những nhánh cây sao cho chúng tạo thành một hình tam giác lệch với ngọn cây tượng trưng cho trời, góc ở giữa tượng trưng cho con người và góc ở phía dưới tượng trưng cho mặt đất.
19. Nên tạo dáng sao cho những nhánh cây mọc từ thân cây đổ (cây huyền) tuân theo các qui tắc dành cho những thân cây thẳng, chỉ trừ việc thân cây mọc nghiêng.
20. Những cây 2 thân nên thiết kế sao cho các cành không che sáng lẫn nhau và không nên có những cành xen giữa các cây bởi chúng sẽ đâm ngang thân cây khi quan sát. Nhìn cây của ông Budi đây bạn sẽ hiểu ngay thôi:
21. Không để những tán lá che khuất Jin.
Nguyên tắc cho chậu bonsai
22. Với chậu chữ nhật, cây nên đặt tránh 4 đường chia đôi chậu cây (4 đường màu đỏ) bởi trong bonsai để tác phẩm trông có vẻ tự nhiên thì nên tránh mọi sự cân xứng.
23. Màu men chậu cần phải hài hòa với màu sắc của cây. Cách đơn giản nhất là chọn màu nâu đỏ của đất nung, màu đất phù hợp với tất cả các loại cây.
24. Nên chọn những chậu có chiều rộng gấp 2/3 chiều cao của cây. Với những cây lùn thì chiều rộng chậu phải gấp 2/3 bề rộng thân cây.
25. Kiểu dáng chậu cũng cần phải phù hợp với kiểu dáng của cây bonsai. Chậu hình chữ nhật thì thích hợp với những cây dáng thẳng không uốn éo nhiều, còn với những cây thẳng không bình thường, những cây mà có nhiều điểm uốn trên thân thì chậu hình oval hay hình tròn là thích hợp nhất.
Tỷ lệ vàng cho cây
26. Đối với cây dáng trực và xiêu, chiều cao của cây bằng 6 lần đường kính gốc.
27. Đối với cây dáng trực và xiêu, khoảng cách từ gốc đến cành thấp nhất = 1/3 chiều cao của cây. Lưu ý trong hình minh họa thì cành có tán lá thấp nhất được tính như cành thấp nhất.
28. Khoảng cách giữa các cành nhánh nhỏ dần từ dưới lên theo tỷ lệ 1/3. Chiều dài của cành nhánh cũng ngắn dần từ dưới lên trên theo tỷ lệ này.
29. Bề dày của chậu = đường kính gốc.
30. Bề rộng của chậu = 2/3 bề rộng tán lá.
