Những kỹ thuật mà chúng tôi đã nêu ở phần 1 của loạt bài viết này giúp tăng thêm khả năng uốn được những cành cây to, tuy vậy, nếu cành cây quá to hoặc quá giòn thì cũng không thể nắn chúng theo vị trí mà mình mong muốn được, mà trước tiên bạn phải làm yếu cấu trúc của nó đã, việc này sẽ hỗ trợ cho các dây chằng hay dây quấn hoạt động được tốt hơn. Phần 2 này sẽ đề cập đến kỹ thuật tạo một mấu hình chữ V trên cành cây.

Nguyên tắc cơ bản để làm yếu cành cây trước khi uốn

Cũng giống như thân cây, cành cây chứa những lớp tế bào sống (nằm ngay dưới vỏ cây) bao quanh phần lõi gỗ “chết” bên trong. Nhiệm vụ của phần lõi này là giữ sức và cấu trúc của cây.

Cấu trúc này hỗ trợ các tế bào sống, giữ cho tán lá nằm đúng vị trí và đủ sức nâng đỡ sao cho cành cây không bị ngã đổ ngay cả khi bị tuyết phủ đầy hay bị những cơn gió vùi dập.

Phần lõi gồm các tế bào gỗ chết kể trên chính là phần mà chúng ta cần phải tác động đi khi uốn cây. Chúng ta cũng có thể làm yếu hay lấy đi phần lõi gỗ này để  làm cho các phần tế bào sống xung quanh yếu đi, và rồi cả cành cây cũng thế.

Có nhiều kỹ thuật làm yếu cành để uốn cây, đó là những kỹ thuật “cao cấp” và chỉ những người nào chăm sóc được cây thật tỉ mỉ và có kinh nghiệm mới có thể thực hành được, vì nó cũng có mặt nguy hiểm và có thể dẫn đến chết cành nếu không được chăm tốt.

“Khắc mấu hình chữ V”, “khoét lỗ”, “chẻ cành”, và “tạo rãnh” phải được thực hiện trên những thân cây khỏe mạnh và trên những cành cây sung sức nhất để nó có thể liền lại vết thương và phục hồi sức sau chấn thương. Mặt trái của phương pháp này là, có thể vết thương quá lớn, cây không lành lại nổi, đối với những vết thương như thế, bạn không nên tạo phía trước của cây, thậm chí bạn có thể “ngụy trang” sao cho nó giống hình dạng gỗ mục tự nhiên như “uro” (vết lõm hình lòng chảo) hay “shari” (những đoạn lõi gỗ tự nhiên thường thấy trên các loại cây có quả hình nón như cây thông và cây tùng cối).

Tính toán thời điểm thích hợp để uốn cây

Một số người đam mê nghệ thuật bonsai cho rằng nên thực hiện những tác động mạnh lên cây vào mùa đông, khi cây đang ngủ đông, để nhằm mục đích “lừa” chúng, thực chất đó là những ý tưởng sai lầm, và phần nào lệch lạc.

Nếu thực hiện vào lúc chớm giữa đông, thời kỳ ngủ đông của cây, thì cây sẽ không thể liền vết thương được cho đến khi nó trở lại hoạt động bình thường vào vài tuần hay vài tháng sau đó. Như vậy sẽ làm cho các vết thương cứ bị phơi trần ra và trầm trọng thêm trong một khoảng thời gian quá dài. Do vậy, bạn nên thực hiện những kỹ thuật này vào lúc cây đang phát triển thuận lợi và những nguy hại do thời tiết băng giá gây ra cũng được giảm xuống mức thấp nhất.

Đối với hầu hết các loài cây thì hoạch định thời điểm thích hợp nhất là vào khoảng cuối hè, hoặc đầu tháng 8, vì ít ra từ lúc đó vẫn còn khoảng 6 tuần nữa thì thời tiết đông giá mới thực sự bắt đầu.

Vào giữa mùa hè, cây bắt đầu ra lá và chồi non mới, đây là khoảng thời gian phát triển, là lúc cây tràn trề sinh lực nhất. Tiến hành những kỹ thuật trên vào thời điểm từ giữa đến cuối hè sẽ giúp cây phục hồi nhanh nhất, không những giảm thiểu được nguy cơ bị sâu mọt ăn hết chồi non hay bị nhiễm bệnh mà còn không cản trở quá trình phát triển của cây.

Đối với những loài cây có nhựa, có quả hình nón như cây thông hay cây gỗ vân sam, thời điểm thích hợp nhất để uốn cây là vào cuối hè, khi lượng nhựa lưu thông giảm đi. Còn đối với những loài sớm rụng lá, có khả năng sẽ chảy nhựa nhiều, bạn không nên uốn vào đầu hay giữa mùa xuân trước khi cây rụng lá và mọc chồi non.

Tốt hơn hết, luôn dùng dây đồng và/hoặc dây chằng để uốn trước khi sử dụng những kỹ thuật này

Kỹ thuật khắc hình chữ V

Khắc hình chữ V đơn giản chỉ là cắt ngang bề rộng của thân cây, rồi uốn nó theo vị trí mà mình mong muốn. Đây là một phương pháp uốn nhanh và tác động trực tiếp vào chỗ cần uốn, tuy nhiên, nó có thể gây ra vết chai sần hay phồng rộp ở ngay chỗ khắc chữ V.

Có thể dùng phương pháp này cho các loài cây sớm rụng lá, hay cây lá rộng, vì dòng nhựa lưu thông của nó không quá chặt chẽ liên tục như các loài cây có quả hình nón (nếu dòng nhựa chạy đến các nhành cây thứ cấp và/ hoặc các tán lá bị đứt giữa chừng, thì những chồi hay lá đang phát triển sẽ bị và có nguy cơ bị sâu mọt phá hoại).

Bạn phải quấn dây hay buộc dây chằng vào cành được uốn để giữ cho cây ở đúng vị trí trong khoảng thời gian nó hồi phục và tạo ra vết chai sần.

Nên bôi một lớp dầu bôi trơn xung quanh lớp gỗ thượng tầng bị lộ ra đối với những cây thuộc họ có quả hình nón, hoặc dùng bột hồ bôi lên vết cắt cho các loài sớm rụng lá.

Hai vết cắt hình chữ V được tạo ra ở quãng chia 2/3 chiều dài cành cây được uốn. Nếu vết cắt không đủ sâu thì chỗ uốn sẽ không được gọn gàng và suôn sẻ. Để tạo ra vết cắt hình chữ V, bạn dùng cây cưa mỏng và nên tạo thành hình tam giác để khi uốn, hai mặt bên của vết cắt sẽ gặp nhau khi chúng tạo thành vết chai sần, từ đó vết cắt sẽ ghép lại vào nhau.

Phương pháp này cũng rất hữu dụng khi dùng để chỉnh lại góc nơi cành cây bị lìa khỏi thân cây. Đối với trường hợp này, chỉ dùng dây không thì có thể khó mà chỉnh được.

Có thể tạo vết cắt ở cuối cành, sau đó dùng dây quấn hay dây chằng để kéo cành hướng xuống. Hai cạnh của vết cắt bị kéo sát vào nhau và cuối cùng là liền lại với nhau.

Nhiều người say mê bonsai thích tạo vết cắt ở phía trên, thay vì dưới chỗ cành giao nhau với thân cây. Cách này sẽ làm vết cắt mở ra và không bị nhìn thấy cho đến khi vết cắt liền sẹo và lấp đầy được chỗ khuyết.

Về cơ bản thì cả hai cách đều tốt và nên được dùng phù hợp với loài cây được uốn; một số loài hình thành sẹo nhanh để lấp đầy chỗ trống của vết cắt hình chữ V, với các loài này thì nên dùng cách tạo vết cắt ở phía bên dưới, cuối cành
